  1. HARDBALL 4:  ONE INNING DEMO

  4. INSTALLATION
  5.  
  6. 1.  With your computer powered up, place the compact disk in your CD-ROM
  7.     tray with the label side up.  (If HardBall 4 is already installed on
  8.     your hard drive, skip to #5.)  At the DOS prompt, type the letter of your 
  9.     CD-ROM drive, followed by a colon, and press <enter>.
  10. 2.  Type cd hb4 and press <enter>. 
  11. 3.  Type install and press <enter>.
  12. 4.  Type in the name of the drive and directory where you would like
  13.     HardBall 4 installed.  Highlight INSTALL and press <enter>.
  14. 5.  If you have 8 megs of RAM, skip to #6.  If you have less than 8 megs of
  15.     RAM, you must run the special VM command listed below before HardBall 4
  16.     will boot.  You must also have an additional 6 megs of hard drive space
  17.     free in addition to space required for the game.
  18.      
  19.        - Type VM at the C:\hb4 prompt and press <enter>.  
  20.        - Type HB4 at the C:\hb4 prompt and press <enter>.

  22. 6.  When installation is complete, the Setup screen is displayed.

  24. SETUP OPTIONS
  25.  
  26. 1.  Adjust joystick - Calibrate your joystick by doing the following:
  27.        
  28.        - Select ADJUST JOYSTICK and press <enter>.
  29.        - Follow the on-screen directions.  (If your joystick does not have
  30.          trim-pots, disregard the readings.)
  31.        - If you have a second joystick plugged in, you can calibrate it the
  32.          same way.
  33.        - Press <esc> to cancel calibration.
  34.  
  35. 2.  Sound and Music
  36.     
  37.     Sound-Digital Audio Driver - Here's how to select the soundcard you want 
  38.     to play your sound effects:
  39.     
  40.        - Press the down arrow key to highlight the desired driver and
  41.          press <enter> to select.
  42.        - Press the right arrow key to select Port, IRQ and DMA settings.
  43.     
  44.     Make sure the settings displayed are correct for your soundcard or 
  45.     you will not get any sound or your computer will lock up.
  46.     Depending on the sound card, change settings using one of these
  47.     methods: 
  48.        
  49.        - Highlight a setting and press <enter> repeatedly until the desired
  50.          setting is displayed or highlight and press <backspace> and type in
  51.          the new setting.
  52.        - If you don't know your settings, highlight Detect Settings and press
  53.          <enter> or consult your soundcard manual.
  54.       
  55.        NOTE:  Using "Detect Settings" is not 100% reliable on all soundcards
  56.               and your computer may lock up.
  57.     
  58.     When soundcard selection and settings are complete, highlight Test and
  59.     press <enter>.  A sound effect will be played if your settings are
  60.     correct.
  61.  
  62.     Music - MIDI Music Driver
  63.     
  64.     Select, change and test music settings just as you did for sound settings.      
  65.  
  66.     
  67. KEYBOARD, JOYSTICK AND MOUSE CONTROLS
  68.  
  69. One or two players can play HardBall 4.  You can use 1 or 2 joysticks, the
  70. keyboard, or any combination thereof.  If you have a mouse, you can use it
  71. on all menu screens by moving the cursor to the desired item and clicking
  72. the left mouse button.  Scroll up and down menus by holding down the left
  73. mouse button and moving the cursor to the bottom or top of the list.  
  74.  
  75. To choose whether a joystick, keyboard or computer controls a team:
  76.  
  77. 1.  Select "Exhibition Game" from the Main Menu.
  78. 2.  Select "Options" from the pre-game screen.
  79. 3.  Highlight the team you want to control in the Player Control box on the
  80.     right of the screen.
  81. 4.  Press <enter> repeatedly until the game controller you want is shown.
  82.     Keyboard 1 is the cursor keys or the keypad.  Keyboard 2 is letters
  83.     A (left), W (up), D (right), X (down), Spacebar (enter), Tab (backspace).
  84.     A joystick(s) selection will be available only if you have a joystick(s)
  85.     plugged in.
  86. 5.  Highlight the opponent and select control in same manner as above.
  87.  
  88. MENU SELECTIONS
  89.  
  90. Use the cursor keys (up,down,left,right arrows) or joystick to highlight a
  91. menu selection then press <enter> or joystick button #1 to select.
  92.  
  93. BATTING
  94.  
  95. Choose a swing type by pressing the cursor key that corresponds
  96. to the desired swing type, then press <enter>.
  97.  
  98. After the pitcher throws the ball, press <enter> to swing the bat.
  99.  
  100. BASE RUNNING
  101.  
  102. The runner goes immediately to first base.  Make the hit a double by pressing
  103. the up arrow key.  The left arrow key moves the runner to third and the down
  104. arrow key sends the runner home.
  105.  
  106. To retreat to a base, hold down the arrow key that corresponds to the base
  107. you want your runner to return to and press <enter).
  108.  
  109. To leadoff or steal - Base runners automatically lead off.  You can increase
  110. their lead off by holding down the arrow key that corresponds to the desired
  111. base.  Hold down the desired arrow key and press <backspace> (button #2 for
  112. joystick users) when the pitcher starts his windup to make the runner steal. 
  113.  
  114. PITCHING
  115.  
  116. Choose a pitch by pressing the cursor key that corresponds to the pitch you
  117. want and then press <enter>.
  118.  
  119. Press and hold down <enter> to start the throw.  Use the cursor keys to aim
  120. the pitch during the windup before the pitcher releases the ball. How long
  121. you hold down the cursor keys determines how far inside/outside, etc. the
  122. pitch will be.
  123.  
  124. To attempt a pickoff, press and hold down the cursor key that corresponds to
  125. the desired base and press <backspace>.  You must select your pitch before
  126. you can try a pickoff.
  127.  
  128. FIELDING
  129.  
  130. After a ball is hit, a yellow circle appears by the feet of the player nearest
  131. the ball.  Use the cursor keys to move the highlighted player to the ball.  If
  132. he is close to a ball, press <backspace> to jump or dive.  If the ball passes
  133. him and another player is closer, press <enter> to switch player control.
  134.  
  135. Once the fielder has the ball, press an arrow key and press <enter> to throw 
  136. toward a base.  First base is the right arrow key, second base is the up
  137. arrow, third is the left arrow and home is the down arrow.
